Apple, China Unicom talk iPhone
China Business reports that Apple is in talks with China Unicom, the Middle Kingdom’s second largest wireless carrier. The move comes in the wake of news that China Mobile, that nation’s biggest carrier, has again stymied attempts to reach a deal by insisting on terms no other iPhone partner has—specifically, the right to operate the AppStore in China.
It is unknown what version of the iPhone Apple plans to sell in China as that country’s 3G network is incompatible with the technologies in use in the US and Europe. It has been rumored that a low cost, 2.5G iPhone (ie EDGE only) handset is the offering being considered.
It is widely believed that hundreds of thousands of iPhones are already in use in China.
