Safari 4 beta: Put tabs back where they belong
All in all the reaction to Safari 4 beta has been rather warm—the speedy Nitro Javascript engine, full page zoom, search suggestions, Top Sites, etc. One feature, however, hasn’t been quite so readily embraced—Tabs on Top.
I’m thinking I’ll probably stay the course because that quarter inch of vertical space means a noticeably larger rendering of Miss March, or whomever I’m looking at, and that’s significant.
Still, it’s good to know if I ever I want to put tabs back where they belong, the helping hands at Swedish Campground have published a method for doing just that and accessing a range of other “hidden preferences” via the command line, as well.
For example, using the “DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop” command will move the tab bar back where you expect it to be:
$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool NO
Copy the quoted command and paste it into Terminal (located in the Utilities folder) and you’re good to go. Sweet, huh?
In all Swedish Campground is listing nine Safari 4 beta hidden preferences that can be diddled without too much fuss. That said, it pays to tread lightly when using the command line.
