Apple ‘touchbook’ to use OLED?

We’ve all heard the rumors—again and again—that Apple is planning a touchscreen-based portable computing device for release in the second half of this year. Naturally, however, when it comes to rumors, there is always “one more thing.”

SmartHouse, an Australia publication previously unknown to me, states that not only are the netbook rumors true, but also that Apple is “exploring” the use of OLED technology for the screen and keyboard, as well as SDX flash memory for storage. Purportedly, Apple has been talked to Sony licensing this (relatively) newfangled display technology.

Possible? Well, if an Apple touchbook were being readied for launch in mid-October as Smarthouse posits, the mothership would be finalizing the BOM now. Further, although it’s certainly possible that there could be competing designs, an OLED based product would be significantly different than an LCD one.

I’m thinking Apple would have made fundamental, design shifting design decisions, like using either OLED or LED, long ago.

Various sources posit this gadget will riff on Apple’s iPod touch touch and, for whatever it’s worth, I’m of the mind that Apple would not build a “netbook” like the Asus eee, creating instead a variation of the already successful and industry changing iPod touch ultra portable computing paradigm.
