Castle Wolfenstein for iPhone goes open source
From a certain perspective, it can be said that the iPhone has not come of age until you can indiscriminately splatter your fellow man (preferably one that’s been mutated in some horrible way) seven ways to Sunday. Well, at least one way has arrived.
VE3D (via iPodNN) reports that id Software has posted an iPhone port of the classic FPS, Wolfenstein 3D (download), as open source. Though intended primarily for developers, this release is playable and new features include more treasure, as well as the ability to try any level regardless of order.
Thereupon, id co-founder John Carmack says he is encouraging other developers to have their way with the code and make the most of it. Further, the game legend has also said a Doom port should be available soon, too.
As promised, Wolfenstein 3D Classic—just as grainy / tacky / awesome looking as you remember—was released earlier this week and is available for $4.99.

Though it might be obvious, Wolfenstein only works on jailbroken phones. Mine isn’t and it’s not going to be, but be sure I was temped.
Well, that was true. Check out Ripdev’s IntallerApp:

which promises jailbreak free app installation.
