How to: Enable tethering in iPhone 3.0

An Irishman (I thought he was a Brit, but he turns out to be a pomme nonetheless) has enabled tethering on his iPhone 3.0 and best of all he’s willing to share the slice of heaven he’s found with everyone.

And, here’s how it works:

1. Put your head between your knees and… (oops, wrong blog)

2. Get and install a copy of iPhone OS 3.0 beta (No, I don’t know where to get it).

3. Navigate to the “~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support” folder on your Mac.

4. Make a back up copy of the IPCC file, then rename it as a ZIP document.

5. Unpack the ZIP into a directly named Payload, where you will edit the info, version and carrier PLIST files
— The first two files only require changing the CFBundleVersion variable to 5.0
— The carrier file however requires adding a new dictionary to the apns array, with “apn = internet,” “password = password” and “username = iphone” as variables
— The wap dictionary demands a new pair, entered as “type-mask = (NUMBER) -2,” and users may also want to enter a new pair in the top-level dictionary as “AllowEDGEEditing = (BOOLEAN) YES.”

6. ZIP the payload folder and rename it to its original title (IPCC),

7. Sync the iPhone with iTunes and check for an update, which will allow you to pick the custom IPCC file you just created. After a reboot, tethering should appear as an option in an iPhone’s Network settings. Tethering is said to be non-functional for 2G (EDGE) iPhones.

A bit more voodoo that you’re used to doing? Hmm, these things generally require a bit more planning, skill and just plain attention to detail than many of us are used putting out. When in doubt wait for Apple to do it for you, right?
