Is it too early to think about the Summer songs of 2009? The fledgling Charlotte, NC quintet Parachute’s Under Control is an early qualifier, if not. Opening with a brief, dual guitar-and-keyboard instrumental exploration, it quickly transforms as infectious piano chords and Will Anderson’s soaring vocals join in to make it an irresistible pop-soul gathering. Organ stabs, whirling guitar interplay and sing-along group backing vocals join in for the chorus, as proverbial drinks in red plastic cups are raised and iPhones are illuminated and waved in communal celebration.

This week we follow a path we rarely go down with our Discovery Download—stand-up comedy. If you’ve ever watched VH1’s Best Week Ever, you’ve probably caught some of Finnegan’s material. The song has a formidable rhythm section in member Gustavo and Marcos (first names only, please!), who pound out a sky’s-the-limit mixture of power chords and fierce drumming. Vocalist Heidy brings it all home, mixing lascivious Spanish/English vocals in her Stefani-esque quaver.

The highly anticipated first season of Glee follows an optimistic high school teacher, Will Schuester, as he tries to refuel his own passion while reinventing the high school’s glee club and challenging a group of outcasts to realize their star potential. It’s not an easy task when the pitch-imperfect club includes Mercedes, a forceful diva-in-training; Artie, a geeky guitarist; Kurt, a dramatic soprano; Tina, a punk rocker; and self-proclaimed “star” Rachel, a perfectionist firecracker. McKinley’s cruel high school caste system prevents the glee club from flourishing, so Will recruits Finn, the quarterback with movie star looks, to join the group even he wants to protect his reputation with his holier-than-thou girlfriend, Quinn, and his arrogant teammate, Puck.
