‘iPod touch on steroids’ [aka Mac touch] not until 2010?
From the “world isn’t fair (I might gonna cry n’ stomp my feet)” department comes the rumor that Apple will not launch a touch-based Mac or, as some prefer, the “iPod touch on steroids” until next year. As an owner of a first generation iPod touch who has imagined vividly where this train’s been heading, me want bad now.
Quoting Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, who’s rumorological record isn’t exactly sterling, Alley Insider reports that Apple’s somewhere between the touch and MacBook device isn’t gonna see the light of day in 2009. Previously, various sources have said it would launch in the regular late Summer to early Fall iPod and/or MacBook update timeframe.
Specifically, Munster says that the hardware isn’t likely the issue. Thereupon a “more robust” version of the iPhone OS, or perhaps Mac OS X Lite™, is likely in the works and due to the relative complexity of project will require more time than many pundits had expects.
It’s hoped that the Mac touch will come to market with at least a 7 inch screen, 802.11n networking (perhaps optional 3G, as well) and a powerful processor + graphics in order to push mobile gaming to the next level.
Does Apple need to light a fire under its Mac touch alchemists and just get it done? Personally, I’m willing to pay for something that’s not quite cooked just because it’ll be truly madly crazy cool (and ahead of the curve) like the original iPhone was…
