Mac OS X 10.5.7: What it’s got, what it’s not

Apple Online StoreNearly 200 fixes and feature tweaks have been baked in, though few if any of these changes are immediately visible after running this update.

As always, Apple has provided a wealth of information of this latest update. That said, there’s not much of anything visibly sexy about OS X 10.5.7 Update and, although there has been a scattering of issues affecting users, there aren’t aren’t any show stopping fixes baked in either.

Here’re some the top issues addressed:

• Includes additional RAW image support for several third-party cameras.
• iCal—Improves reliability when automatically syncing with MobileMe.
• Mail— Addresses reliability and sync issues with Notes.
• Admin can set Parental Controls to allow children to add additional printers
• Resolves an issue that may cause certain third-party printers to print to the incorrect paper tray.
• Adds support for the ATI 4890

According to an examination of the OS X 10.5.7’s BOM file performed Macworld UK, Apple has to varying degrees updated Address Book, Automator, Dashboard, DVD Player, Exposé, Front Row, iCal, iChat, Mail, Preview, Safari 4 Beta, Spaces, Time Machine, Bluetooth File Exchange, RAID Utility, Remote Install Mac OS X, System Profiler, Terminal, and X11.

For its part, News.com adds that OS X 10.5.7 Update addresses a number of security issues, as well, including issues related to Apache Web server, PHP, CoreGraphics, and Safari. Further, this update patches three separate vulnerabilities in Apple Type Services, QuickDraw Manager, and WebKit, all of which could allow for arbitrary code execution.

I installed both OS X 10.5.7 and Safari 4 beta (run Software Update again after installing the OS) updates early this morning and haven’t experienced any issues on my Early 2008 MacBook. As is often the after installing Apple Combo Update or “delta” version of an OS patch, my Mac feels more responsive and smoother.

Thereupon, my family’s two Mac minis (1.25GHz G4, 1.66GHz Mactel) will get Leopardized anew later today, as well.

Experiencing any issues on your end?
