OS X 10.5.7 update coming Friday, May 8?

MICROSOFT OFFICE 2008 FOR MACFor weeks, this and other Mac news outlets have been predicting the imminent arrival of the next incremental operating system update from the mothership. Last week, we learned that Apple has withheld OS X 10.5.7 in order to get things just right as this update is one of the last in the Leopard lineage.

Today, Mac | Life reports that the wait might finally be coming to an end. According to a “super-secret” source, OS X 10.5.7 is slated to arrive this Friday with fixes for well over 100 networking, syncing, email and more issues.

That said, as a person with history in computer and software support, I can tell you it’s generally a rather poor idea to release a patch on Friday, especially one of this size. Because, if something goes badly wrong (and something’s always wrong with software), you get a whole weekend of bad press and little to no choice of making things right until Monday. Been there, done that and I’ve watched others, like Adobe and Microsoft, fall into the same trap.

My take? OS X 10.5.7 might be coming later today or even tomorrow, May 7, but probably not on Friday.
