Plane crashes, MacBook Pro lives to compute again
Posted on May 1st, 2009 by admin
Len Johnson made history by completing the first ever transcontinental flight fueled by biofuel. Moreover, he did it in a homebuilt plane.
On the the return trip home, however, weather forced Len to make an unscheduled stop—his plane didn’t survive the crash, but Johnson and his Apple MacBook Pro did.
It’s been said that any landing you can walk away from—I guess getting carted away in an ambulance counts, too—should be considered a successful landing. Leaving the scene of the crash with a working MacBook Pro has to be considered gravy.

Well thanks, but some landings are better than others. I’m up and walking again- and building a new airplane!
The old airplane was fueled with N-butanol, sometimes called bio-butanol. There are other stories about this flight- here’s one from the Smithsonian, mostly accurate- http://www.airspacemag.com/flight-today/37670829.html. There’s a fairly complete narrative on my web site at looklocal.org; just click on the biofuel flight link at the top of the home page.
