Star Trek: You saw the movie, now get the soundtrack

Despite my previous raves, the final three cues are the selling point … “To Boldly Go” breaks from the (somewhat tired) use of solo trumpet for the “Courage” fanfare starting the film endings and makes more powerful use of the whole brass section before merging into the film’s greatest 2 minutes: the original TOS title theme. Dated no more, the ensemble orchestra and choir makes this retro part a rousing (slightly jazzy) statement, even using it as string counterpoint against the main them … Trust me, waiting a few more listens for the score to wow you is worth itSoundtrackGeek.com

When it comes convenience, nothing can touch Apple’s massive, well-designed and slickly integrated iTunes Music Store—it just works with your Mac, iPod or iPhone, and is encoded in mp4 format, which is higher quality than traditional mp3. Yes, compared to Amazon, it’ll cost a few pennies more, but it’ll save you the hassle and potential conflict of installing additional software.

Nevertheless, Amazon’s got the lower price for both the download and CD.

• iTunes: Star Trek (Music from the Motion Picture), $9.99
— See most of the Star Trek music offerings on iTunes

• Amazonmp3.com: Star Trek (Music from the Motion Picture), ($8.99)
— See all Star Trek music offerings on Amazon

• Amazon.com: Star Trek (CD, Music from the Motion Picture), ($9.99 + $2.98 shipping)

• Overstock.com Michael Giacchino – Star Trek (2009) Soundtrack, (CD) $13.74 + $2.95 shipping
