What’s inside Apple’s 2009 back to school promo
It’s that time of the year again, but we still don’t have an official inkling what this year’s Apple back to school promotion will look like. Of course, 2008’s highly successful educational offering paired the purchase of any new Mac with a “free” 8GB iPod nano or 8GB iPod touch—a deal I took advantage of.
Today, quoting anonymous sources, MacNN reports that Apple is again considering giving away an 8GB iPod nano or 8GB iPod touch, but is also said to be eying the option of a free 8GB iPhone with each Mac sold, as well.
The promotion could launch as soon as next Tuesday, which would closely mirror the window of last year’s deal, which began June 3rd. Back to School sales—in combination with hardware refreshes—have helped to boost sagging Mac numbers in the past. It is uncertain though how the announcement of a next-generation iPhone might affect the promotion, since the 8GB option could be made obsolete in favor of 16 and 32GB capacities as soon as June 8th.
Naturally, every handset, free or otherwise, will require a two-year AT&T (<-insert name of your country's carrier) contract but there is some question about how much this will cost as AT&T is said to be considering cheaper rate plans (ie less data). There’s an obvious mass market (where do I sign?) appeal to a free iPhone plus a reduced cost contract.
Further, when will these “free” iPhones become available? At the beginning of June when Apple traditionally announces its back to school promotions or when the “new” (same look, updated guts) iPhone ships later this Summer?
Lots of interesting possibilities here and however this turns out it looks like another good Summer to buy a Mac is just around the corner…
