How to: Easy iPhone OS 3.0 tethering for AT&T subscribers

MICROSOFT OFFICE 2008 FOR MACSince the iPhone first shipped, AT&T has definitely been the weakest link in the chain. However, of late, Apple’s sole wireless partner in these United States has been pissing current and potential customers off wholesale.

The lack of MMS and modem tethering at launch are the two top complaints. Moreover, that neither of these services is included as part of the AT&T’s “unlimited” data plan, among the most expensive in the industry, is another bone of contention.

With the that background, I am pleased to present one, two, three easy way to enable tethering on your OS 3.0 upgraded iPhone:

1. If needed, download and install iTunes 8.2 and iPhone OS 3.0, both are free.

2. Run the following command in Terminal on your Mac:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

3. Download this file (for AT&T) (other carriers here) and mount the disk image

4. With your iPhone attached to your Mac and iTunes 8.2 running, highlight the iPhone in the left-hand tray, click the Summary tab, then Option-click “Restore,” browse to the opened disk image file and click “OK.” Your iPhone will be update in just a few minutes.

5. Lastly, turn on your iPhone, go to Settings -> General -> Network/Internet Tethering and select enable.

That wasn’t too bad, was it? And, it’s not like you’ll feel even a twinge of guilt, especially given that AT&T says that they will officially support tethering later this year for $50+ a month. That is another $50+ on top of the minimum $70 you’re already paying for unlimited data services. Nope, didn’t think so…

  3. I would encourage everyone to do this and start tattering. If AT&T can stick it to you, you can stick it back at AT&T. Why not bring down their 3G network on a daily basis?
