How to: Set Firefox’s homepage to open multiple tabs
Here’s a neat little trick that will open a user definable (that’s you) set of websites in multiple tabs in a single Firefox window, which is a fine, fine way to start the day. That is, click Firefox once and it delivers your morning news briefing in less time than it takes to pour your first cup o’ coffee.
1. Open Firefox
2. Go to Preferences (⌘ + comma) -> Main
3. In the Home Page address area, type or paste in the URLs, with each separated by a “|” (pipe), of the websites you want to open in a single window
The site where I found this trick, Sava’s Place (via MacMod), used the example of three sites and I’ve tested a mix of five sites:
http://mac.blorge.com|http://fairerplatform.com|http://digg.com/users/mac888|
http://www.facebook.com/rocr69|http://www.mixx.com/users/mac888
Can you do more? Probably, I don’t know what if any hard limit exists.
Further, I’ve tested this in Firefox 3.0.11, Flock 2.5 and Camino 2 beta 3, and found that it works in the first two but not the latter. Also, this trick doesn’t work in Safari 4—bummer.
Another downside? Every time you open a new window in Firefox, these same tabs will open.
