Mac OS X 10.5.8 [9L25] seeded to devs
What has no known issues, addresses only two bugs and could be the PowerPC platform’s last Mac OS X hurrah? That would be Apple’s latest build of OS X 10.5.8, of course.
AppleInsider reports that the mothership continues to nit and pick the breadth and depth of Leopard. Cupertino’s software overlords have again asked developers to refocus on new parts of the overall operating system in an apparent effort to identify and repair any lingering issues.
Since opening the Mac OS X 10.5.8 beta test to developers approximately one month ago, Apple has shown signs that the release may cap off development of Mac OS X 10.5 … For example, each new build has arrived with a focus area noticeably distinct from the last, with lower-level technologies and frameworks seeing greater attention than usual.
Once again, this latest build lists no known issues and addresses just two new bugs—one related to saving mail messages and another regarding URL localization.
Gentlemen, check your drivers
That said, MacRumors has a pearl of wisdom vis-a-vis this Leopard maintenance release:
Mac Pro customers using the GeForce GTX 285 aftermarket graphics card should plan to update their card’s driver before upgrading to Apple’s forthcoming OS X 10.5.8. Failure to upgrade the driver prior to installing OS X 10.5.8 reportedly can cause system hanging.
In related news, recent days have also seen Mac OS X 10.6 10A402 (client) and 10A403 (server) builds seeded to devs with the apparent emphasis on delivering spit and polish optimization.
