How to: Wake on Demand for network, music, printer
Let your Mac sleep and still be at the ready to share music, files, discs, devices and more via Airport wireless — another of the dozens of little reasons Snow Leopard’s a must have upgrade for anyone with an Intel Mac.
Whereas nearly all older Macs support Wake on Ethernet, Wake on Airport wasn’t available until Friday’s release of OS X 10.6. Further, from optical disc and screen sharing to iTunes and printer sharing, there’s an array of attractive services and applications that take advantage of this functionality.
Apple says that Snow Leopard’s Wake on Demand requires an Apple AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule with firmware 7.4.2 or later installed. Further, all 2009 Macs support this functionality as do a number of recent Macs, including my Early 2008 MacBook.

System Profiler can tell you if your Mac supports Wake on Demand via Airport
— Set up iTunes Sharing
The secret sauce in this Snow Leopard plus recent Mac equation is actually Bonjour, meaning any application or service that’s Bonjour aware can take advantage of Wake on Demand via Airport and Ethernet. So, iTunes sharing, printer sharing, Back to My Mac, file sharing and screen sharing are all supported.

On Mac portables, enable Wake on Demand via the Energy Saver pane
— Set up file, etc sharing
All of this “new” functionality is great, but I suspect that it’s just beginning as third-party developers will be able to extend Wake on Demand to whole host of new features. Moreover, building a Mac mini home media server and/or set top box takes on new dimensions with the arrival of Snow Leopard.
What’s your favorite new Snow Leopard feature? So far the coolest of the cool for me is still the price…
