iPod touch users continue to shun updates
When Apple shipped iPhone OS 3.0 at $10, many iPod touch users simply ignored it. It’s easy to image all of those people as disgruntled first generation touch owners, except that sales of the devices didn’t truly take off until the second generation model arrived.
Now we’ve learned from AdMob the release of iPhone OS 3.1.1 with its $5 price tag has similarly been greeted coldly by iPod touch users, continuing the silent revolt against what many view as Apple’s unfair charges for software updates — yes, we know it’s all about accounting rules.

Whatever the cause, only 35 percent of iPod owners, at least the ones AdMob measures, have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.x compared to 91 percent of iPhone owners.
With the federal government relaxing the accounting rules that “forced” the company to charge for updates, I wonder if Cupertino will release iPhone OS 3.1.2 just for touch owners with the hot new feature being that it’s completely free…
