Video: Sprint CEO says iPhone is ‘in a separate category’

A truly brilliant moment — a mea culpa that could potentially get him fired — was delivered by Sprint CEO Daniel Hesse in an appearance on the Charlie Rose Show. He was asked if Sprint’s big product of the year, the Palm Pre, was making any headway against the Apple’s iPhone and he answers plainly and honesty, which isn’t always a good idea when you’re big league executive.

Q: Is the Palm Pre making a dent into the iPhone market?
A: Aaah… It’s-it’s doing well, but you can almost put the iPhone, to be fair, in a separate category. The Apple brand and that device have done so well, it’s almost not… it’s like comparing someone to Michael Jordan.

Although he’s probably not going to lose his job, especially given poignant rumors of a Deutsche Telecom buyout of Sprint, I can image the board saying to him, “We hired you for sales, not honesty. Accept this fruit basket as a token of our appreciation for your service. On your way out please send Mr Rubenstein in next? Thank you.”
