Apple’s Ive speaks [obsessively] about Aluminum
The world is an imperfect place, especially in the incessantly critiquing and skeptical eye of a designer. For Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, Jonathan Ive, his focus is mostly on the details you can’t see, the hidden bits of a device that allow him to present a more perfect whole.
I love the introduction by Dieter Rams, the man behind Braun’s fashionably minimalist designs from the ’60s on. The contrast between his somewhat taciturn delivery and Ive’s obsessed enthusiasm couldn’t be more different, yet they’ve both helped establish and refine an aesthetic that sums up the last six decades of style.
Another favorite designer of mine is Raymond Loewy, whose notion of streamlining and modernism were the essence of America’s imagine of itself her and abroad before, during and after World War II.
