Like cats and dogs lying down together, sin is in for the great majority of households that own a Mac. In fact, the overwhelming majority own both computers running OS X and something else (ie Windows).

Quoting NPD survey data, News.com brings us the news that 12 percent of US households have at least one Mac. Sadly, of those domiciles, nearly 85 percent also own a PC.

Thereupon, the obvious and perhaps only meaningful reason to own a PC is gaming. Yes, there are games for the Mac, but not nearly as many.

Chicken or the egg?

Interestingly, NPD also found that two-thirds of all Mac owners also have three or more computers in their homes and twice as many gadgets, such as iPods and GPS systems, as PC only abodes.

“While Apple owners tend to own more computers and more electronics devices, there is also a high correlation among Apple owners and more affluent consumer households,” said NPD analyst Stephen Baker. “Thirty-six percent of Apple computer owners reported household incomes greater than $100,000, compared to 21 percent of all consumers. With a higher household income, though, it’s not a surprise that those consumers are making more electronics purchases.”

And, that’s a nit I’d certainly like to pick. Honestly, do Mac households have more stuff because they have more income or do they have more income because they have Macs? Hmm, I wonder…
