iTunes: Celebrate Monty Python at 40

Although you won’t find special features celebrating Monty Python’s 40th anniversary on the iTunes Store, you will find pretty much everything the lads — John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and the late Graham Chapman — ever made. Yes, they’re still flogging the sordid crap that made them somewhat famous for far too long already.

Thereupon, The Pythons have been on something of a media blitz, promoting a documentary, Monty Python: Almost the Truth (The Lawyer’s Cut), covering a creative run that together stretched from 1969, when Monty Python’s Flying Circus began airing on the BBC, through 1983 and the group’s final theatrical release, The Meaning of Life. Believe or not, this new film is actually six hours long.

“It’s cut very well, so it really moves,” Terry Jones told The LA Times. “But it’s also just having the time to go into areas that other documentaries don’t. They did three-hour interviews and I thought, ‘My God, how on Earth can you talk about Python for three hours?’

“But it went surprisingly quickly, and we got into areas that I don’t think we’d necessarily been into before, about ‘What was it like when you were growing up?’ and ‘What was your relationship with your father?’ I found it absolutely fascinating hearing Mike talking about his parents and Eric talking about his mother and being sent away to school.”

Of course, what else would he say given that this picture is his son’s fault and he really doesn’t have any better way to pay his mounting debts.

Anyway, if you want to be fleeced by these nearly funny louts again, then here’s a quick flip through some of what’s available (to jog your memory, you son of a silly person). From the small handful of skits and TV shows that might have been funny once to Python’s films, which go on hours too long, don’t surprised if you should suddenly feel ill while reading this hastily cobbled together list (I don’t know why I bother):

Dead Parrot Sketch, tolerably short and only 95p
The Philosopher’s Song, one of their most nearly funny bits at just 99p.
Every Sperm is Sacred, puts it to the pope but costs an intolerable $1.29
Monty Python’s Flying Circus, some of less bad episodes might be said to be nearly worth the $1.99 when you’re drunk, but don’t get me started on the $25.87 season pass price.
Life of Brian, a prime example of why they only made three films
Monthy Python: Almost the Truth (the lawyer’s cut), the final insult and maybe if we buy this one too they won’t be back for any more money (they’re already too old to go on much longer)

Well, that’s the end of this bit, which I really shouldn’t have gone to the trouble of writing because lord knows these wankers were oversold the first 40 times around and, of course, you can get it all for free from BitTorrent anyway…
