NYT digital wonk mentions ‘impending Apple slate’
Perhaps just an off-hand reference to the swirling rumors or perhaps an insider comment from a guy tasked with bringing the New York Times digital online efforts up to speed. Whatever the case, a telling example of Apple’s overarching influence in the digital.
Gawker has dug up a six-day-old reference to the Apple tablet in the form of a presentation made by New York Times (NYT) columnist Bill Keller, who’s also working on making that publication’s digital forays pay. Doubly interesting is the fact his remarks were apparently made “off the record” to NYT staffers and weren’t intended for publication.
The comment that’s got people talking takes place at 8 minutes 30 seconds: “I’m hoping we can get the newsroom more actively involved in the challenge of delivering our best journalism in the form of Times Reader, iPhone apps, WAP, or the impending Apple slate…”

Of course, it has been rumored that Apple has approached the New York Times and other struggling old-school dead-tree publishers with the goal of re-inventing print via Cupertino’s long-rumored and longed for Mac tablet — aka Mac touch, iPod touch on steroids.
Well, it all makes sense. The only real question is was Keller speaking off-the-cuff about the rumored Apple tablet or was he referencing a device he has inside knowledge about? That’s an interesting question…
