Taiwanese OEM claims camera order win for ‘new’ iPod
This could just be a run-of-the-mill report of Apple adding another supplier for an existing part. Or, this could actually be a new product — or one should already be in our hands (ie the camera-equipped iPod touch) — and the timing of this “announcement” is what makes it interesting.
Quoting no one in particular, CENS reports that Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO), a Taiwanese optical lens and light-emitting diode (LED) maker, has announced an order for camera lens to be used in a new Apple iPod. No, you won’t find any reference to this purported announcement on the company’s website and a quick search of the Chinese-language media only reveals the same info we’ve got here, so go figure.
Nevertheless, CSEO chairman Chen Tian-ching says shipments of this lens began this month and could reach up to 1 million units per lunar cycle (ie per mont). Further, he adds that his company has begun small-batch shipments of lenses for use in the iPhone 3GS.
Thereupon, if Apple were planning to release an updated iPod touch or iPod touch on steroids with camera in early 2010, October is the timeframe you’d want to start sampling and then very quickly ramp up production. Contrariwise, assuming the company’s supplying lenses for the new video-camera-equipped iPod nano, October’s perhaps a tad late in the season to satisfy holiday sales.
