Rumors of a MobileMe refresh are coming true at least in part. The mothership’s posted a feature list for a beta MobileMe Mail service, though there’s no info on the future of the online service’s other aspects.

Apple has introduced a MobileMe beta and their taking requests for invitations to participate in a beta of the service.

Just log into the online version of MobileMe Mail and click the image (left) at the bottom left of the Mail page.

New features are to include:

• Widescreen and compact views
• Rules to keep your email organized
• Single-click archiving
• Formatting toolbar
• Improved performance
• Increased security with SSL

The MobileMe Mail beta requires a modern browser — Safari 4.x, Firefox 3.6, and Internet Explorer 8 or better.

The possibility of MobileMe becoming free is exciting. However, with Mail in beta, the question of what will happen to MobileMe’s other services begs answers.

Is this the end for the oft criticized pay-to-play online service or does Apple have something big in store?
