HTML5 games start to trickle out

Looking for some decidedly lo-res gaming fun in the classic ’80s style, but you’d rather get your giggles sans Flash?

Akihabara is offering clones of some classic games — Capman (i.e. PacMan), Leave Me Alone, Solitude (Galaga-esque), The Legend Of Sadness, T-Spin — and has done it using HTML5 and JavaScript. You can play using Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Opera with no plugins needed.

And, yes, these games will work, more or less, on your iPad and iPhone, too.

It is a set of libraries, tools and presets to create pixelated indie-style 8/16-bit era games in Javascript that runs in your browser without any Flash plugin, making use of a small small small subset of the HTML5 features, that are actually available on many modern browsers.”

So, yes, you can play these games on your Mac, as well as iPad (Solitude pictured above), though the game controls on Apple’s latest creation could use a little refinement.

There’s a rousing game of Bricks available from HTML5 Games, as well.

Splatter n’ gore

Perhaps the most-impressive HTML5-based game on the web right now is the port of Quake II created by a trio of Google programmers — a powerful demo of what WebGL is capable of delivering.

Meanwhile, Cult of Mac reports that the clever lads at Gaikai are working to bring World of WarCraft to the iPad, as well, using HTML5.

[...] Galactic Plunder, an ’80s arcade style side-scrolling space shooter, was created to show off what’s possible with JavaScript and HTML5 (i.e. Canvas, Audio tags). Of course, no Flash was used in the creation of this game, which underscores just how far HTML5 and JS have come and just how close those technologies are coming to replacing Adobe’s insecure, resource hogging middleware (yea!).
