VideoLAN.org has announced VLC Player 1.1 RC (change log), a free and open source cross-platform (Mac, Linux, Unix, BeOS, PC) multimedia player and framework, that plays just about every multimedia file type, including as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs and various streaming protocols.
New features:
• GPU and DSP decoding, depending on the platform
• Faster and more stable
• New codecs and HD codecs enhancements
• Webm and VP8 support
• MKV, mp4 and avi improvements
• Important code cleanup and rewrite
• Interface and playlist reworked
