iOS 4: What’s inside, how to update
Apple has rolled iOS 4 Update, a free download. In adition to a newish now phoneless name, this whole number mobile operating system upgrade includes an impressive array of new and improved features, including marquee functionality such as multitasking, iBooks, folders, iAds, improved Mail and the ability to create playlists.
That said, iOS 4 won’t install on the iPad — a version for Apple’s “magical” tablet computing device is coming this Fall. Additionally, first generation iPhone and original iPod touch aren’t eligible either.
If you have an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and current generation iPod touch, you can download and install iOS 4. For iPhone 3G and some second generation touch owners, you can install, but not all features — no multitasking due to only 128MB RAM — are available on those devices.
To get iOS 4:
1. Make sure you are using the latest version of iTunes (fire up Software Update). Connect your iPhone to your computer.
2. When iTunes opens, select your iPhone under Devices in the Source List on the left.
3. In the iPhone Summary pane, click Check for Update.
4. Click Download and Install. Do not disconnect your iPhone until the update has finished.
There have been numerous reports that the iPhone 3G is the hardest to get iOS 4 to install on. Although there have been instances of 3Gs getting bricked, the most common issue appears to be hour or longer install times.
