In addition to unprecedented pre-order sales, yesterday there were more than 13 million visits to AT&T’s website where customers can check to see if they are eligible to upgrade to a new phone; that number is about 3X higher than the previous record for eligibility upgrade checks in one day” — AT&T

Ma Bell also says this is 10X the demand it experienced when the iPhone 3GS launched last year. As of this writing AT&T says its investigating reports of security lapses and, no, their online ordering system hasn’t come back up yet.

That said, wouldn’t it be nice if we could hear these words from AT&T without the train wreck? That would make for a truly forgettable iPhone launch day…
