Tip: RipIt is the best DVD ripper
I have tried lots of DVD rippers and they have all failed, alone and in combination. MacTheRipper, Popcorn, Fairmount and a half-dozen others have all been consigned to the dustbin history (actually, I’ve kept them all handy just in case). The one standout, however, is Little App Factory’s RipIt ($19.99, fully functional demo), which is the reigning and still undefeated (eight wins by knockout) champion DVD ripper.
“We’d like to report that RipIt has just been verified to work with its 250,000th unique disc! If you put that against the failures that have been reported, our success rate is a truly ridiculous 99.9999 percent!”
RipIt 1.4.4 has just been released and, although it is but a humble maintenance release, it brings some notable features to the table:
• Added identification of Handbrake CLI usage in optional compress feature
• Added logic to handle disc changes during compression
• Added back button to user interface when rip/compress completes
• Added notice on compress to choose manual or automatic
• Added check for for available disk space
• Added Danish and Japanese to preferred languages

RipIt ships ready to tear and Little App Factory gives you the first 10 rips free. So far, I’ve used eight of the freebies and it has yet to disappoint me. Also, because RipIt gives you a VIDEO_TS folder, it’s super easy to create duplicates and recompressed DVDs, as well as iPod, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV playable files.

Actually, yes, RipIt is pretty great.
BUT, when all I want is the MOVIE, without all of the foreign languages, previews and extra features, I use one of 2 choices that have worked quite consistently: MacTheRipper (3.0 r14m) rarely fails to work for me; HandBrake (64-bit) in conjunction with VLC (64-bit) also rarely fails to work for me.
Both of these give me controls over the ripping process that RipIt just doesn’t have — like the ability to get rid of all of the aforementioned extras that just bloat the file. And, due to some problems with Toast, I can’t count on it to allow me to take my RipIt files and eliminate those items. Too often, Toast informs me that it cannot function properly when I try to delete everything but the main title.
So, on a consistent basis, I utilize MTR or HandBrake — but, just in case, I keep RipIt for a backup solution.
Put down that cocktail! It’s been a few years since Toast was reliable — they’ve gotten a bit lazy I think. Honestly, if it’s a straight copy I need, Apple’s Disk Utility is often the better choice…
My question: which DVD ripper, if any, will let me take just a short clip from a DVD? I occasionally want to take a clip from a commercial film (that I own, of course), and incorporate it into a fun home video (strictly for private, noncommercial viewing by family and friends, of course). For instance, I might want to put an explosion from an action film into a home movie.
Is there a ripper that allows me to extract just the short clips I want instead of the entire movie?
