Hands on with Picasa Web Album Uploader
I’ve a rather long investment in time, money and skills in Apple iPhoto, a very productive relationship that stretches more than eight years. However, when it comes to sharing photos, there are better and more affordable choices than MobileMe. It’s time for you to check out Picasa Web Albums, too.
Google’s Picasa (free, review) is a very capable photo management, editing and sharing application. For my money, it’s not as polished, or familiar, as iPhoto.
That said, there’s one part of the Picasa package that I think’s unbeatable, Picasa Web Albums, a free online photo publishing, sharing and, should you need it in a pinch, editing package.
If you’ve already got a Google account, then login, click settings and go to Picasa Web Albums to get set up. To upload from the desktop or export from iPhoto, you’ll also need Picasa Web Album Uploader, a standalone app + iPhoto plugin that’s also available as part of the full install of the Picasa desktop app for Mac.
Again, Picasa Web Albums is free and super easy to use. And, if you’ve already got a Google account, all you need to do is login, set it up and don’t forget the Picasa Web Albums Uploader…
What’s your favorite Google app or service?

I can’t stand iPhoto. It has a very poor interface, and requires a lot of clicking and dragging, sorting and organising. It has more powerful editing features than Picasa but takes a lot more work to use. Finding older photos that were never categorised is a real nightmare.
Picasa is very intuitive, especially when zooming and editing. Managing albums is easier because they already exist, rather than duplicating the photos. Picasa’s main weakness, IMHO, is it’s folder management. If I could select multiple folders and rearrange them in Picasa, that would be great. And for some reason Picasa can sometimes take ages to recognise and add new photos or folders.
