PowerPC processors were the beating heart of Apple’s Macintosh computers from 1994 until 2006, when the company switched to Intel chips. The last two PPC Macs under my care, a pair of Mac minis, were sold on eBay earlier this year. That said, the folks at Mozilla are considering leaving PPC-powered Macs behind, too.
In a note on the mozilla.dev.planning group, Mozilla user interaction designer Mike Beltzner writes that Firefox support for PPC Macs might be coming to an end:
…I am gathering data on the number of PPC users we have, but the likely outcome is that we will not be supporting PPC for Firefox 4. More on that as I get the data.
We do have tests running on PPC, but nobody seems to be looking at them.
cheers,
mike
Shocking? Hardly as it’s already been four years since Apple shipped its last PPC Mac, though a bit sad nonetheless.
Are you still using a PPC Mac? If so, what model?
