Back in the second quarter, when the naysayers were still pooh-poohing the success of the iPad, Asus saw netbook sales decline by about 7 percent. Now, the giant Taiwanese hardware manufacturer is revising down its netbook sales projection for the critical holiday shopping period, a fact the ties in nicely with other recent reports of falling PC production out of Asia.
DigiTimes reports that Asus has cut its third quarter, which is the stocking period ahead of the holiday shopping period, netbook outlook by about 7 percent. This follows a 7 percent slide in the second quarter, putting unit sales down double digits so far this year.

And, according to DigiTimes, Asus’ flagging fortunes can be tied directly to the iPad. Additionally, it’s been reported that Taiwanese OEMs saw notebook sales and orders tank in July.
And, no, Apple’s Mac sales haven’t been hit. It seems like the vaunted “halo effect” is just getting started…
What’s your take?

The iPad fills so many needs. It’s perfect for those times when a smart phone is just too small to be enjoyable to use extensively yet it would be a pain to bother with carrying and handling a laptop. I wish I had an iPad! Since my employer provides me with a laptop and a Droid, I’ve been too cheap to buy myself one.
