Torrent Tweet: For the OCD geek

8 August 2010 1,589 views No Comment

What could be wrong with marrying BitTorrent and Twitter? Well, aside from the fact that the great majority of torrent traffic is “illegal” and Twitter is innately public, nothing at all. With that in mind, BitTorrent has announced in a blog post the advent of Torrent Tweet, an app plus hashtag that allows tweeps to follow discussions about specific torrents.

“Tweets are indexed with an automatically generated hashtag unique to each torrent file,” writes Simon Morris, vice president, product management. “Find out what people are saying about torrents you are downloading and sign in to a Twitter account to contribute to the discussion.”

Like other add-on apps, such as uMap, Torrent Tweet was developed in-house and allows individual torrents to be indexed by an infoshash or a  digital fingerprint of a file. For the obsessive tweep who compulsively downloads his favorite shows, this provides more refined torrent sharing functionality and control.
