Apple headcount up 12K

Apple has released its fourth fiscal quarter 10-K statement and Reuters has spent some time crawling around therein. As we all know, the company has posted record revenues and profits on record Mac and iPhone volumes, though some of the most interesting details have just been revealed:
• 46,600 employees, up from 34,300 last year and 32,000 in 2008
• 317 stores, up from 273 last year
• Gross margin of 39.4 percent vs. 40.1 percent in 2009
• Apple will open 40 to 50 stores in fiscal 2011
— $404-million in retail capital expenditures
— $2.6-billion in overal capital expenditures
Yes, Apple’s headcount is up by more than one-third, which is an amazing factoid. Though, as the numbers indicate, the mothership largely put a kibosh on hiring in 2009, leaving pent up demand to be filled this year.
