Skype 2.8.0.863, Adium 1.4: A tale of two apps
Although Skype is a staple of the Mac platform having earned this status by being down right useful, we on the fairer platform are definitely second class citizens. Why say that? Well, Skype for Windows is at version 5 with lots of features we don’t get and Linux is currently at v2.1 beta.
As Mac owners, we’ve all had this experience — a PC owner wants to show you some really awesome feature/functionality, but his machine just keeps crashing. “Dude, it was working yesterday,” says your friend. For the rest of us, this is doubly irritating as it reminds that, yes, PCs really do suck and here’s yet another thing an important commercial software vendor can’t be bothered to give us that would work if we had it.
Anyway, Skype 2.8.0.863 (download) is now available and it resolves the login issue so many of us have experienced of late, though it doesn’t deliver that nifty multi-caller feature (grumble, grumble, grumble).
Then there’s Adium 1.4 (release notes, download), which is open-source and jammed packed with features, and it comes to market with, hey, lots of new and interesting features:
• Added Twitter
• Added IRC
• Greatly improved group chats and group chat bookmarks
• Updated to libpurple 2.6.6 with added fixes
• Mind-bogglingly large number of enhancements and bug fixes
Regardless, it’s still a beautiful day both inside and out (clouds and rain included), sitting here by the corner window in front of this gloriously smooth iMac…
What’s your take?

Of course this is based on theory that Mac users actually have friends. Not buying it. Anyways, I just use the PC version of Skype with ALL the cool features.
Sucks to be you.

Clarkson: Extraordinarily unhelpful. You must be 12.
