VideoBox adds Silverlight, RTMP downloads [u]

This web video downloader has been in my Applications folder for years. Interestingly, unlike other downloaders, which come and (mostly) go with the wind, VideoBox just keeps getting better and this latest update is a great example of the developers’ commitment to building out this application.

TastyApps is now shipping VideoBox 3.2 ($15), which introduces a number of important new features that greatly extend the usability of this popular Flash et al video downloader. Features and fixes in this release include:

[u] See also: VideoBox 3.2.1, which addresses a pair of OS X 10.5 related bugs.

• Added support for Silverlight videos
• Support for some (but probably not all) RTMP streams with more to come as find new samples and code around them
• [FIX] QuickTime movies (not supported on Mac OS X 10.6+) could crash the plugin in Safari
• [FIX] Video (Page) title grabbing should be better
• [FIX] In Safari, a window opened without a toolbar would not show the button when the toolbar was shown
• [FIX] Duplicates in the queue should be a thing of the past now, or happen very, very rarely

You can also download embedded QuickTime movies and convert them on the fly to the desired format, which is a nice convenience.

See comments. One feature I would like to see in VideoBox is the ability to download HTML5. Yes, this app will redirect you to the Flash version, but it would be nice to avoid this intermediate step. See comments.

It bears mentioning that Tasty Apps has dropped support for Tiger (OS X 10.4.x) in VideoBox 3.2, so Tiger users shouldn’t install this particular update. That said, the company says that still unreleased update for Tiger users will address the bugs listed for v3.2.

Thank you very much for hanging with us! I’m the author of Videobox, and knowing you’ve had it in your folder for years is singing to my ears! We *do* try very hard to improve with every version, and I’m glad it shows.

I just wanted to clarify one thing though… When you say you want more HTML 5 support… Do you mean in the Videobox application itself? The thing is HMTL5 is supported – in theory… I know it works very well in the Safari plugin – so I’m just wondering if you found a bug in the plugin, or I’ve missed something in the main application…

    Thanks!

OK, VideoBox does support the downloading of HTML5 video. That is, you must have the VideoBox Safari toolbar button installed (I prefer my toolbar clean and smooth). Well, after re-installing, the button appeared and clicking it with a YouTube HTML5 video loaded results (after a minute or two) in the video appearing in the VideoBox queue ready for download and conversion. Sah-wee-tuh…

Thanks for the heads up, Jean.

Have you compared VideoBox with Jaksta for Mac?
