YouTube5 extension obviates Flash

Safari runs for days and probably could for weeks, except. That is, it runs smoothly until Flash either brings it to a crawl or crashes it — it’s inevitable. Back in the ’90s and early noughties when Netscape and Internet Explorer crashed hourly, I would have given my eye teeth for performance like this, but the times they are a changing.

If you’ve been considering removing Flash from your Mac in a permanent way, then here’s a way forward:

1.) Get Adobe’s Flash Uninstaller (Mac OS X 10.3 and up) and use it.

2.) Now, download YouTube5 and install it (double-click it).

What does YouTube5 do for you? Well, it removes the need to use Flash on YouTube by converting all videos to their HTML5 video tag equivalents.

Unfortunately, and this is something that should be easily overcome, YouTube5 doesn’t work with Flash videos on CNN or Vimeo, for example. Why CNN doesn’t offer HTML5 on their website for the desktop is beyond me, ’cause it’s already available for the iPad and iPhone.

Anyway, living Flash-free is happening, now more than ever…

What’s your take?

I use ClicktoFlash with Safari 5 and my web experience has never been to good !!! NONE of the Flash content is even downloaded unless I specifically click on the flash “area” on the web page.

Pages load wicked fast and I don’t wast bandwidth downloading crappy advertising or other page garbage that I didn’t want to see anyway.

If you haven’t tried ClicktoFlash, do yourself a favor and try it. You’ll be happy you did !

I will definitely be trying YouTube5 ASAP !! Just one more way to improve my web experience
