eMusic drops credits for variable pricing

The rollout is complete. The ever insurgent online music seller has added more than 250,000 tracks from Universal’s back catalog and switched from a credit-based subscription model to one built around variable DRM-free MP3 track pricing with songs selling from 49 cents.

Earlier this month eMusic announced it would be adding 250,000 songs from the Universal catalog to their already extensive 10-million track catalog. Further, the company also announced its intention to move from a one-credit-per-song subscription model to one based on variable track pricing.

Though similar in structure to iTunes and AmazonMP3, eMusic’s price are notably lower, ranging from $0.49 to $0.89 versus $0.69 and $1.29.

Thereupon, the addition of new music and transition to the new model is now complete — a package designed to help eMusic, which has perennially ranked the number two or three online music service, to better compete with Apple and Amazon.

eMusic’s basic subscription costs $11.99, which could net you up to 24 songs per month, and tops out with a $31.99 account. The company also offers a trial with $10 of free music that, love it or hate it, gives the user up to 20 songs to keep with no DRM.
