Does your ISP limit downloads? Find out

This is surely a question that’s crossed you mind — Is your internet service provider limiting the download of certain types of data on the connection you pay for? With every single House Representative who signed the net neutrality pledge voted out and the FCC’s position now in doubt, broadband providers have probably already filled that policy void with action that’s not beneficial to you.

Well, thank goodness for our friends at the Max Plank Institute — it’s in Europe — who’ve created the Glasnost test, a battery of seven discrete measures (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, Email [POP], Email [IMAP4], HTTP transfer, SSH transfer, Usenet [NNTP] and Flash video) that will show what services your broadband is or isn’t limiting.

And, yes, you read the graphic correctly, my ISP (Roadrunner) is apparently limiting BitTorrent downloads. However, they don’t seem to be limiting Flash video (YouTube, etc.) downloads and I don’t much care about the rest.

That said, for Mac users, to work around a unique policy setting in Apple’s Java, Glasnost had to sign our Java Applet for MacOS X, so you’ll have to “trust” the applet in order to run the Glasnost test.
