How many current software vendors state that the current version of their app maintains Mac OS 9 compatibility? I guessing just one and that’s Solutions Etcetera. Their continuing development and innovation of the HyperCard platform is a study in the “past is prologue” concept. Step inside for a quick look at what’s new in this modern rewrite of this most retro software.

Solutions Etcetera’s SuperCard 4.7 is a lot more modern than previous releases, featuring a host of standard OS X features, including Quick Look, Cover Flow and Spotlight. And, yes, this is the son of HyperCard, the presentation and application creation environment from Apple software legend Bill Atkinson circa 1987 and this latest version maintains backwards compatibility with Mac OS 9.

Here are the bullet points:
• Preview your projects in Quick Look and Cover Flow
• Spotlight indexing and search
• Spelling and grammer checking
• 70 language additions
• Script hierarchy menu
• User defined shared scripts
• Over 60 new features, enhancements

SuperCard 4.7 is available in two iterations: SuperCard: Essentials 4.7 ($179) and SuperCard Suite 4.7 ($279). There is, however, a free 30-day trial and you’ll need a Mac running OS X 10.4 or higher, which means PPC Macs work, too.
