App Store nannies finger iCab Mobile

If you do serious web work on your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, more than just browsing, then you really need to get Alexander Clauss’ mobile browser. That was true before Apple decided to crimp module support, still true today and will be all the more when he delivers a Facebook sharing add-on.
I’ve been saying it for a long time and I’m not done yet — iCab Mobile (iTunes, $1.99) is the best mobile browser.
That said, Alexander Clauss has a somewhat sad tale to tell vis-a-vis recent interactions with the App Store nannies. In a blog post entitled iCab Mobile Modules and Apple, he describes how Apple crimped iCab Mobile’s style just a little.
Recently I received a phone call from Apple. They asked me to remove the ability to download and install modules from the internet in iCab Mobile. So, as of iCab Mobile 4.6, the ability to download and install modules is no longer working … But the modules feature is not gone. I’ve simply included all modules which could be downloaded before from my server directly in iCab Mobile, so all the modules are automatically available without downloading them…
Modules add discreet functions (see image above), such as the ability to save a webpage, clip or image using Evernote, to iCab Mobile. And, up until the release of iCab Mobile 4.6, users could roll their own, usually crafted with JavaScript, and add functionality on the fly.
Naughty is as naughty does…
Well, JavaScript can be used for nefarious purposes and Apple killed the immediacy of module’s user appeal. Yes, Clauss will add modules upon (reasonable) request and he’s also planning on delivering more of his own, specifically a share on Facebook module.
Still, a pretty darned neat feature even after Apple’s meddling App Store nannies had their way…
What’s your take?

While it may be less convenient now, I think downloading the entire set at once is probably a more secure option.
iCab Mobile is an incredibly good and full-featured browser. I use it for everything but opening web sites from emails and would do it from iCab if I remembered to copy and paste the link.
