Hands on: Google Reader extension for Safari

Apple’s Mac OS X Lion is bringing big changes. For some, the shift has already come and there are casualties, including NetNewsWire (no longer launches) — Google Reader plus this extension makes the wait for the new version a little more palatable.

Bless all RSS readers, large and small. Google Reader is good and, until the OS X Lion compatible version of NetNewsWire comes, it’s what I’m using.

That said, Google Reader Snow Leopard, a Safari extension that cleans up Google Reader, has been a real blessing.

This extension gets Google’s user interface mess out of the way. For example, Reader’s text-only GMail, Calendars, etc. links are converted into buttons as are the news sorting tools (i.e. View Settings, Mark as Read, etc.)

These interface tweaks taken together create a lot more space for news items and that’s why we use RSS — powerful Applesque voodoo.

Also, if you’re a WebKit nightlies junkie, Google Reader Snow Leopard is now compatible.
