How to: Go back to Skype 2.8

It’s great that Skype 5.x can do group video calls. But that can’t make up for the reliability and the simply awful user interface. However, you can go back to an older, more stable version of Skype and it only takes a few minutes.
Yes, there is an updated version, Skype 5.1.0.922, though there aren’t any release notes and the forum comments around the web so far are less than encouraging. Additionally, whatever under-the-hood reliability changes may have been, the user interface is still hideous.
So, the first thing you need to is get rid of Skype 5.x. Yes, you can simply drag it to the Trash. However, in my experience, either installing over or dragging to the Trash results in a zombie file and app crashing.
So, get yourself a copy of AppDelete (shareware) and get rid of Skype 5 and the associated files — it works and it’s easy. And, although technically unnecessary, a quick restart or logout won’t hurt your chances of success.
Next, download Skype 2.8, mount the disk image and drag it into your Applications folder. And, that’s it…
Glad to be back on Skype 2.8 or did v5.1.0.922 fix the itch…

Or, if you truly fed up with Skype 5.x, there’s always the option of going back to Skype 2.8… [...]
[...] If you’d just like to forget about Skype 5.1 (i.e. group calling isn’t important to you), you should consider going back to Skype 2.8. [...]
