It mimics the capabilities of NSText and other classes from Cocoa API.
I think it is still maintained by the original author who is now a manager
of the cocoa group.

If you needed tables, Word 5.1; if not WriteNow was better, faster, cheaper, and did I mention faster?

TextEdit, incidentally, is somewhat descended from the NeXT version of WriteNow (which was a port — the Mac version of WriteNow was written entirely in assembler) which evolved into the word-processing core of NeXTStep (as I understand it).
