Gone in OS X Lion: iSync, Exposé in the Dock

This isn’t the Fairer Platform’s first time at the missing OS X Lion feature rodeo. Thereupon, the trimmings in Apple’s next-generation operating system are significant — Rosetta, Java Runtime, Flash, Samba and Front Row.

Well, we can add another legacy feature to the list of things Apple’s forward migrating into oblivion. TUAW reports that iSync is going the way of DOS and the dodo.

In a nutshell, Apple’s iSync is the feature in OS X that folks use to sync feature phones, such as the Motorola Razr, Nokia 91 and even Palm phones and PDAs (ugh!). With those devices fading fast into the sunset, the mothership’s decided it’s time for the rest of us to move on.

Make that a double

Features come and features go, but few quite so fast as this one. According to Wikipedia, Exposé in the Dock, a way of activating Exposé for a single application from the Dock, added in Mac OS X 10.6 has gone missing.

The little white dots beneath active apps in the Dock are also gone. And as is already well-known, Rosetta (and thus, PPC-only apps like older versions of Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Quicken 2007) is history. In Mail, Bounce is also gone. I have no idea why, but it is. I use that a lot to bounce spam back at the sender, so I’m sorry it’s leaving.

Just copy iSync and the plugin needed for your phone back from a Snow Leaopard disk or time machine backup….works a treat

The funny thing was that Apple created iSync but never truly supported it or encouraged phone manufacturers to adopt it. Personally, I think iSync is/was a great idea but no one cared about it. So, it is no surprise that it was “killed.”

On the other hand, there are a decent handful of people that like and use it regularly and like it a lot. I, of corse, am one of them. The funny thing about Apple is that it “loves” to support the few and geeky but at the same time, it is a true mainstream commercial company. What a pity… it’s all about iTunes and the iPod/iPhone. Oh well…

So instead of deleting it, make it “un supported’ but still available. Anyways, I will still use my Nokia and make a point of NOT buying an iPhone. I am sure Apple really doesn’t care anyways.. they will now sell 59,999,999 iPhone 5 instead of 60,000,000…
