iMac EFI Update 1.6 boosts SATA to 6Gbps

Popcorn 4 - Hot for the HolidayIt’s only been a couple days since Apple released the Early 2011 iMac, yet there are already updates that address a number of compatibility issues. More interesting still is a firmware update that enables full 6Gbps SATA performance. Come inside for the full monty.

Other World Computing reports that there’s more to Apple’s iMac EFI Update 1.6 (6.1MB) than just “fixes that improve performance and stability for Thunderbolt.”

Specifically, the Mac peripheral and add-on reseller discovered that iMac EFI Update 1.6 also unlocks the full 6Gbp throughput potential of SATA 3.0 capabilities in two of the the Early 2011 iMac’s drive bays. Unfortunately, the optical bay remains at 3Gbps.

Apple’s also delivered the Mac OS X 10.6.7 for Early 2011 iMac (382.56MB), which addresses a number of reliability, compatibility and device support issues:
