Acer stuffed the channel [and then some]

This week’s WTF moment comes to us courtesy of Acer, which has been going through tough times of late. How tough? The company recently sent its Italian CEO packing, but the housecleaning isn’t over yet and European consumers are set to benefit.
It’s true — I’ve taken real pleasure in watching Acer implode over the last year. However, the fun and games aren’t over yet, kids.
DigiTimes reports that Acer has announced it will provide $150 million in sales allowances to its European channel partners. Thereupon, an unnamed industry insider quoted in the piece says that’s equivalent to 3 million laptops given away for free.
Unclear at this point is whether Acer’s trying to unload older Core 2 Duo products or newer Sandy Bridge products. If it’s the former, $150 million might not be enough to get the job done.
Not dining alone
Who’s eating Acer’s lunch in Europe? Oddly enough, it’s Asustek.
However, with Apple’s European sales posting double-digit gains quarter after quarter, you’ve gotta believe Cupertino’s getting their piece of Acer’s Old World action.
What’s your take?
