There are a lot of look alike Mac OS X utilities, perhaps too many, though few have more history than this hardware diagnostic, drive repair and daily maintenance app. Moreover, it once carried an official Apple recommendation. Here is what’s new with this venerable utility.

Micromat has posted TechTool Pro 6.0.2 (release notes), which brings new and updated features, as well as a quite a few bug fixes:

• Added File Sync Cloning option in Volume Cloning.
• Fixed eDrive creation and remove issues. Fixed Video Memory crash for active multiple monitors.
• Fixed Memory Test inconsistent pass and fail result.
• Fixed VRAM size issue in Video Memory test for dual video chipsets.
• Fixed SMART Check issue not loading on headless Macs.
• Fixed Surface Scan crash issue.
• Fixed consistent number of reported processor cores.
• Fixed Memory Test issue for Macs with 24GB of physical RAM or greater.
• Fixed TechTool Protection system preference serial number issue for multiple users.
• Fixed mounting and dismounting application crash.
• Enhanced install and uninstall routines in TechTool Pro 6 Installer. Improved support for internal SAS hard drives.
• Addressed reported issues with Apple RAID hardware cards.
• Updated and fixed localization issues for French, Italian, German, Japanese and Chinese (Simplified).
• Included additional machine identification models to Check Computer.

TechTool Pro’s system requirements are rather modest, requiring only a PowerPC G4 867MHz or newer and Mac OS X 10.4.9 or higher. Yes, Intel and Snow Leopard are supported, as well.
