I don’t think so, but save a copy just to be just sure:

~/Library > Safari > Bookmarks.plist and make a copy or just drag it to the desktop.

After you’re done upgrading, put a copy back in Library > Safari

apologies for what must seem a silly question but if I throw 5.1 in the trash and empty it won’t I have lost all my bookmarks?

I don’t have the latest version of OS-X (Lion), or even Snow Leopard; just plain old Leopard (10.5.8). But I too would like to get back to Safari 5.0.5.

I’ve been regularly upgrading with whatever Software Update has been recommending, and the last of these gave me the headache of Safari 5.0.6 (maybe not as bad as 5.1, but still, something I’d like to lose). Can I do it the same way you’ve listed here — or perhaps some other?

That’s a great piece of news – I’m so frustrated with Safari 5.1, I’ve been looking all over the place for a copy of Safari 5.0, thanks.

Safari 5.1 blows, especially in Snow Leopard. It’s buggy, leaky, and a major source of frustration.
