So, you’ve installed Lion only to discover your CS3 or earlier version of Photoshop won’t launch — been there, done that. Here are three affordable image editors that are Mac OS X 10.7 compatible. Step inside for the details, including an Adobe work around.

Pixelmator 1.6.6 (blog) offers Lion-specific bug fixes. However, the company says that version 2.0, codenamed Chameleon, will be fully Lionized.

As of this writing, Pixelmator has been pulled or is otherwise not available on the Mac App Store. Also, users are reporting in comments attached to the above linked blog post that v1.6.6 likes to crash.

Though most people thought they’d see a cold day in heck before Adobe put product on the Mac App Store, here’s ones. Photoshop Elements 9 (App Store, $79.99) is out and is more Lion compatible (to a degree).

Thereupon, PSE 9 has a crash on quit issue when running under Lion, but there’s a work around. You’ll need to <make the Library folder in your home directory visible and then delete the following files from Library > Preferences:

• com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
• Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 paths
• Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 settings
• opera prefernces (if you have them)

Lastly, repair permissions (Utilities > Disk Utility) and you should be good to go.

In related news, my current image editing axe is Acorn ($49.99) and, yes, it’s also Lion compatible.
